Job Description
The Mechanical Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable execution of mechanical maintenance, repair, fabrication, installation, and inspection activities. Reporting directly to the General Foreman, the Mechanical Supervisor provides hands-on leadership to field and shop personnel while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and client requirements. This role serves as the primary link between operations, customers, and trades personnel and is accountable for workforce productivity, service quality, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and supervise mechanical personnel in daily operations.
• Plan, schedule, coordinate, and prioritize maintenance and project activities.
• Manage labour allocation and workforce utilization.
• Act as primary client contact for assigned projects and service work.
• Ensure work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards.
• Conduct toolbox talks, safety inspections, hazard assessments, and incident investigations.
• Review work packages, technical drawings, specifications, and procedures.
• Provide advanced troubleshooting support for complex mechanical issues.
• Monitor productivity, quality, and project performance.
• Approve timesheets, work orders, and maintenance documentation.
• Coordinate equipment, material, and tool requirements.
• Support estimating, planning, and project execution activities.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
Reporting Structure & Direct Reports
Reports to: General Manager
Direct Reports: Typically supervises 5–20 employees, including Red Seal Journeypersons, Apprentices, Labourers, and Contractors as required.
Provides mentorship, coaching, performance management, and development support to all direct reports.
Authority & Decision-Making
• Provides input into hiring, promotions, training, and workforce planning.
• Conducts performance reviews and coaching discussions.
• Recommends disciplinary actions when necessary.
• Authorized to assign work, adjust schedules, and prioritize operational requirements.
• Supports purchasing activities by providing recommendations and administering approved budgets and expenditures.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
• Safety performance and participation in the Act of Vigilance program.
• Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) and near-miss reporting.
• Schedule adherence and on-time completion of work.
• Labour utilization and workforce productivity.
• Budget performance and cost control.
• Rework rates and quality compliance.
• Equipment uptime and maintenance effectiveness.
• Employee development and apprenticeship progression.
• Client satisfaction and repeat business opportunities.
Qualifications
• Mandatory Red Seal Certification in a relevant trade.
• Minimum 5 years of trade experience and 2 years of leadership experience.
• Secondary trade experience in electrical, welding, fabrication, or related discipline is an asset.
• Strong knowledge of marine and industrial maintenance practices.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and digital maintenance systems.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
• Ability to work in industrial, shop, and field environments.
• Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Use of required PPE.
• Exposure to noise, weather conditions, machinery, and industrial hazards.
• Ability to access vessels, confined spaces, elevated work areas, and customer sites when required.
On-Call & Travel Requirements
• Participation in an on-call rotation may be required.
• Must be available for emergency response, shutdowns, and unplanned maintenance events.
• Regular local travel to customer sites.
• Occasional out-of-province travel required.
Work Schedule
Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Overtime, evenings, weekends, and holiday work may be required to meet operational and customer requirements.
