SAFETY

SAFETY

DF Barnes’ number one overriding value is our dedication to providing a safe working environment for all our employees. DF Barnes was a founding signatory of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission’s (WHSCC) inaugural CEO Leadership Charter in 2007. This charter is a visible commitment to help shape safety culture throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and we promote this commitment to safety throughout our organization.

To protect everyone, we go above and beyond the workplace health and safety standards.  At the forefront of this initiative is a company-wide shared mindset that safety is the most important priority in a days work. It ensures that everyone feels secure in his or her daily lives, and that their families have peace of mind that their loved ones are being protected. By making safety our number one priority, and educating each employee on the benefits of a shared culture of safety, we have maintained an industry leading safety performance. Our efforts have been rewarded with a Certificate of Recognition from the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association (NLCSA).

The best way to protect our employees at DF Barnes is to educate them on procedures, protocols and potential dangers in the workplace. From there, each employee is encouraged to “own” the company’s safety culture.

DF Barnes’ dedication to safety allows our company to successfully attract and retain reliable workers. Our employees and their families can rest assured knowing that having a safe work environment is our primary concern.

New Employee OrientationNew Employee Orientation

Employees at DF Barnes start their career with a comprehensive safety orientation. An employee’s level of experience is identified to all coworkers, and under close supervision, a vigilant foreman, shares and enforces all safety procedures.

New Employee OrientationProgram Fundamentals

Since all of our employees are involved in implementing our safety program, we appreciate their feedback. Employees are encouraged to share their thoughts through:
• Daily Toolbox Meetings
• Workplace Observation Cards
• Job Hazard Analysis Cards
• Root Cause Analysis

New Employee OrientationStudent Mentoring

DF Barnes is dedicated to ensuring that our safety culture is continuously passed onto the next generation. To reach out to potential future employees, we offer great apprenticeship and co-op programs to college and university students. For high school students, DF Barnes employees often visit local schools to give presentations on the importance of safety in the workplace.

New Employee OrientationManagement Assessment

Health and safety concerns are the first matters discussed at every bi-weekly managerial meeting. A close eye is kept on safety statistics and these are reviewed with all staff during quarterly Town Hall meetings.

New Employee OrientationSafety Summits

These all-day events are held annually to promote the importance of workplace safety, during which we identify and mitigate any problem areas that may exist within our current program.
